A 12-acre commercial site has a composite runoff coefficient of 0.85. For the design storm, the rainfall intensity at the time of concentration is 3.2 in/hr. Using the Rational Method, the peak runoff (cfs) is most nearly:

Solution. Rational Method, Q = C·i·A, with Q in cfs when i is in in/hr and A in acres (the 1.008 conversion factor is taken as 1). Q = 0.85 × 3.2 × 12 = 32.6 cfs.

The trap: (D) is what you get by forgetting C. (B) is 0.85 × 3.2 × 12 with area mistakenly reduced by 0.83 ha/ac. Watch the unit line.

Is this for the current PE Civil: Construction exam?
Yes. It follows the PE Civil: Construction computer-based exam specification, effective April 2024: the same 11 knowledge areas, the same question ranges, and the same design standards on screen (ACI 347R, ACI SP-4, AISC 15th, ASCE 37-14, CMWB, PCA EB001, MUTCD Part 6, 29 CFR 1903 and 1926).
What is on the PE Civil: Construction exam?
80 questions across 11 knowledge areas, from Soil Mechanics to Health and Safety. Design for Support of Construction Loads carries the most, 10 to 15 questions. The course map shows every area and its range, straight from the NCEES specification.
Is the PE exam open book? Do I need the handbook?
It is closed book. NCEES puts the PE Civil Reference Handbook and the design standards on screen during the exam, and the handbook is free to download from NCEES. Finding things in it fast matters more than memorizing it, so that is what we drill.
How much time do I get per question?
NCEES sets the appointment length and the breaks, so check its PE Civil page before exam day. Here, every question you answer is timed, and after each test you see where your time went, so you learn your own pace instead of guessing at one.
How long should I study for the PE exam?
It depends on your background and how much time you can give it, and nobody honest can promise a number. Your study plan shows what your minutes a day add up to before your exam date, and the breakdown after each test shows where that time should go.
What is the PE Civil: Construction pass rate?
NCEES publishes the official pass rates for every PE exam on its website. We will not quote a pass rate of our own until we have real results to report, and we will never invent one.
